Judge hears arguments against Alabama immigration law

Parts of Alabama’s new immigration law scheduled to take effect Sept. 1 could be blocked by a federal court judge who began hearing arguments Wednesday.

The U.S. Justice Department, a group of Alabama church leaders and several civil rights groups are asking U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn to block the law’s Sept. 1 implementation date, arguing it violates several basic rights and conflicts with federal law.

During the all-day hearing in Birmingham, Blackburn acknowledged flaws in two of the law’s provisions.

Blackburn questioned the requirement for school districts to check the immigration status of newly-enrolled students as well as a provision that allows law enforcement officers with “reasonable suspicion” that a person is in the country illegally to detain the person while checking their status.

The judge also described immigration violations as a civil offense rather than a criminal offense.

Blackburn was skeptical, however, of the church groups’ claims and said there was nothing in the legislation that banned religious services.

Blackburn did not indicate when she would rule, but a decision is likely to come before the Sept. 1 implementation date.

A federal judge in Georgia ruled June 27 against requiring police to check the immigration status of suspects who cannot produce identification.

A provision that made it a crime to harbor or transport an undocumented immigrant was also blocked in Georgia.

Several other states have also had parts of their immigrations laws blocked, but in all cases, the federal judges have upheld mandating electronic verification (E-Verify), a provision that will affect every Alabama employer.

The Alabama Farmers Federation supports secure borders and immigration reform, but maintains the newly passed state immigration law does not provide an adequate method of obtaining legal workers, as farmers across the state are already struggling to find workers to harvest crops.

The Farmers Federation is following the law’s progress closely. Visit http://www.alfafarmers.org.

Sending 1% of the population away doesn't create new jobs but it does reduce local business by 1% thus making them fire/layoff 1% or more employees to compensate for losses, it evens out. Also, kicking out 1/200th of the kids from school doesn't let you shut down the entire school, so no money saved there either, the other 199 legal kids still have to use it everyday. They also can't steal any benefits, nor vote, and tons of traffic tickets, $500 a pop, no real IDs remember, this means no benefits and lots of suffering, a real no brainer.

What it truly does is make everyone pay more for food, particularly chicken, fruits, &vegetables, Alabama's biggest money makers, in fact food is already rotting in the fields from the immigrants that have left early out of frustration, yet unemployement remains steady. Hmmm?

What it also does is put a burdern on all business and levels of government to check IDs everywhere all the time, costing us $10's of millions of dollars year after year in taxes on our already short budget... Ouch!

Lastly, the law promotes crime, particularly theft, because all immigrants will be afraid to report any incidents for fear of arrest. It is also a crime against humanity and religion because you cannot help an illegal, not even to the hospital if they are bleeding to death in the street. Shame! Shame!

This is clearly a play to get votes, 98% of Alabama is non-immigrant, therefore he is hoping for 98% of the votes from the hateful population. A stupid racial strategy from back in the slave days. Lookup "Southern strategy" on wikipedia. History repeats itself... Distriminate against the minority, steal some of the majority vote. The wealthy educated valuable states don't fall for such political nonsense, only poorly educated southerners, thus the whole reason for the civil war. "Stupid is as stupid does..."

Are you on crack? 1% are you kidding? How about checking the food stamp, prison, hospital and other government give away programs cost to taxpayers.
How do you think paying a couple of cents more is even in the picture?
You are already paying more in taxes than it would cost for a product If that burden wasn't dumped on us in taxes. Tax dollars could be used to help the unemployed Americans that are starving because of lost jobs and high taxes.
Because of liberal views such as yours, you have allowed our government and big business to send our jobs overseas, illegals to suck the system dry and totally destroy the American dream.
How about stepping up to the plate and pay your liberal share of my taxes and I can use that extra money to support the American economy? Try looking at the big picture. Illegals cost in tax dollars. Duh!!!!
