Twenty-three Virginia-North Carolina peanut farmers were honored for top yields in 2001 at the Champions' Nite Out in Raleigh.
Bayer and BASF sponsor the event, in conjunction with the North Carolina Peanut Growers Association, the Virginia Peanut Growers Association, and the Extension Service in each state.
Prior to the awards presentation April 6, growers attended a seminar, where they received a farm bill update, product updates and a message from Meg Scott Phipps, North Carolina commissioner of agriculture.
Jimmy and J.C. Forehand of Chowan County took home North Carolina honors for having the top yield of 5,848 pounds per acre on 59.9 acres. Mike Williams is the county agent.
Brian Atkins of Isle of Wight County won the Virginia honors with 5,190 pounds per acre on 25 acres. Bob Goerger is the county agent.
