Hugh A. Weathers, a third generation dairy farmer, was named the interim commissioner of agriculture in South Carolina recently.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford made the appointment to fill the position while charges against suspended ag commissioner Charles Sharpe are pending.

Weathers, 48, is co-owner of Weathers Farms, Inc., a 650-cow dairy in Bowman, S.C., and Weathers Trucking Inc., a bulk milk delivery service for more than 30 dairies in South Carolina.

Weathers graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in accounting and finance. He is also part owner in Circle W Farms, a row-crop farming operation in Bowman, S.C.

He currently serves on the board of the American Dairy Association of South Carolina, and the AgSouth Farm Credit Association. He has served on the South Carolina Conservation Bank, Southeast United Dairy Industry Association and the United Dairy Industry Association.

“Hugh is a businessman who knows just how critical it is to keep an eye on the bottom line and deliver value to the customer,” South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said in making the announcement.
