Virginia peanut yields are down, other crops increase

Virginia soybean yield as of Nov. 1 is estimated to be 27 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels per acre from the previous month’s forecast.

Soybean producers in the Commonwealth are expected to harvest 490,000 acres, down 20,000 acres from last year.

Production is forecast to be 13.2 million bushels, down 16 percent from last year.

The Commonwealth’s peanut yield is forecast to be 1,900 pounds per acre, down 100 pounds per acre from the previous month’s forecast. Production is estimated to be 39.9 million pounds, down 27 percent from last year. Producers are expected to harvest 21,000 acres in 2007.

Cotton yields are forecast to be 748 pounds per acre, up 162 pounds per acre from last month and up 31 pounds per acre from last year. Production is expected to total 92,000 bales. Cotton growers in the Commonwealth expect to harvest 59,000 acres in 2007.

Virginia’s corn producers averaged 85 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels per acre from the October forecast but down 35 bushels per acre from last year. Corn for grain production is expected to total 34 million bushels from 400,000 acres.
