Tennessee schedules burley, forage field day

Concurrent to the tobacco tour, a separate program on forages will be presented. Speakers on the forage tour will discuss alternative materials to fertilize hay and pastures, and visitors will learn how these products can fit into a nutrient management program.

The University of Tennessee Research and Education Center at Greeneville will hold its annual Tobacco and Forage Field Day on Thursday, July 16, beginning at 8 a.m.

The event, which is free, features UT Institute of Agriculture researchers and Extension specialists and includes two concurrent tours.

The tobacco tour will explore different aspects of burley production research, including nitrogen rates and timing of harvest, which can have an impact on yields and leaf quality. Program topics also include new research involving mechanization of harvesting and grading tobacco and curing strategies to produce a high-quality leaf. The impact of variety selection on yield and quality of cured leaf will also be discussed. Visitors are invited to see first-hand how burley varieties are performing in the field this year and which new varieties are available.

Concurrent to the tobacco tour, a separate program on forages will be presented. Speakers on the forage tour will discuss alternative materials to fertilize hay and pastures, and visitors will learn how these products can fit into a nutrient management program. Field day visitors will also have the opportunity to see which of the available warm-season annuals could integrate well into their forage systems, and they will have an opportunity to walk through the forage variety trials planted at the Greeneville Center and ask questions about the varieties and their performance.

A trade show featuring private vendors and educational and informational displays will also be available for visitors to enjoy.

Both tours during the event will be presented twice, so visitors may attend each tour. Transportation will be provided to each tour stop.

A sponsored lunch will be served at 1 p.m. courtesy of the Burley Stabilization Corp., Carolina Soil, Chemtura Corporation Inc., and the Wax Company.
