This year’s University of Tennessee Beef and Forage Field Day will feature a panel discussion involving key individuals from the food and meat industry and the Beef Industry Council.

A joint event of the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station and UT Extension, Eastern Region, the field day is scheduled for June 15 on the grounds of the Blount Unit of the East Tennessee Research and Education Center in Knoxville. Activities will begin at 7:30 a.m. with registration and a trade show.

Panelists will discuss trends and patterns in consumer demand for beef and how consumer preferences relate to cattle producers in Tennessee. Scheduled to appear are Valerie Bass, executive director with the Tennessee Beef Industry Council, and Steve Holloway, director of meat and seafood operations with Food City. Emmit Rawls, UT livestock marketing specialist, will both moderate and participate as a panel member.

Following the panel discussion field talks will be presented on topics including how to make culling decisions for the cow herd and factors to consider in bull selection. These discussions will feature live animals. Additional talks will feature discussions of hay quality and feeding needs, controlling weeds in pastures, and other pasture management tips.

Following a sponsored beef brisket lunch, Beef Quality Assurance training will be offered if enough participants pre-register in this optional training.

The East Tennessee Research and Education Center’s Blount Unit can be found approximately eight miles south of the UT agricultural campus off U.S. Highway 129 on Singleton Station Road. If approaching from the south, Singleton Station Road is just over one mile north of the intersection of U.S. 129 and I-140 (Pellissippi Parkway).
