Farmers and many others tuning-in to their favorite Sunday-morning news shows will see a new addition to the lineup: biodiesel.
Part of the advanced biofuels initiative, a marketing program funded in part by United Soybean Board (USB) and several state soybean checkoff boards, the new commercial highlights the benefits of biodiesel.
“The Environmental Protection Agency designated biodiesel as the only advanced biofuel currently available in the United States,” said Jim Willers, soybean farmer from Beaver Creek, Minn., who volunteers his time as a USB farmer-director.
“The checkoff recognizes the need to promote this distinction and set biodiesel apart from other renewable fuels.”
The advanced biofuel initiative helps promote biodiesel’s superior qualities over competitive renewable fuels. The messages aim to educate consumers about the economic, environmental and national security benefits of biodiesel.
“As soybean farmers, we’ve created another market for our oil,” added Willers. “Soybean oil no longer represents the weak sister, but an equal partner in the value of our soybeans.”
The most recent federal government statistics show biodiesel represents 14 percent of annual soybean oil demand and remains the predominant raw material used for biodiesel production.
USB helped pave the way for biodiesel’s designation as an advanced biofuel, in part by funding research to map the lifecycle and prove the sustainability of soy-based biodiesel production.
