The Southern Peanut Farmers Federation invites all farmers to participate in the fifth annual Southern Peanut Growers Conference, scheduled for July 20-22, at the Edgewater Beach Resort in Panama City, Fla. The conference is presented by the federation in conjunction with the University of Georgia, Auburn University and the University of Florida.
Peanut farmers will have an opportunity to learn about the latest production efficiency techniques, obtain updates on on-going production research, hear about peanuts and peanut butter in the government feeding programs, find out about upcoming legislative issues, sample new peanut and peanut butter products and visit with peanut farmers from other states.
The conference kicks off on Sunday, July 20, with registration open from 1 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. A welcoming reception/luau will be held from 7 until 10 p.m.
Monday’s program begins with a prayer breakfast at 7 a.m. featuring Congressman Jeff Miller of Florida. The first general session, beginning at 8 a.m., will feature current issues, including The Senate Perspective, The House Perspective with Congressman Bill Jenkins of Tennessee, Forming a CMA, and Electronic Marketing of Cotton.
The second general session, beginning at 10:15 a.m., is entitled The New Peanut Program: A Town Hall Meeting, featuring government and industry representatives.
Following a lunch buffet at 11:45 a.m., research breakout sessions will feature the following topics: Water Management & Harvesting, Marketing Options and Peanut Disease Risk Index. The sessions will be repeated at 2:15 p.m.
A National Peanut Board Annual Grower Summit will be held at 3:15 p.m.
Tuesday’s program will begin at 7 a.m. with a breakfast where the Farm Press Peanut Profitability Award winners will be recognized. The third general session begins at 8:30 a.m. featuring the following topics: Why Sod-Based Rotation is Needed, Dallas Hartzog; Peanut Economics, Marshall Lamb; and Breeding & New Varieties.
The fourth general session will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature the following topics on Promoting Your Product: Peanut Advisory Board Promotions, Leslie Wagner; American Peanut Council Promotions, Patrick Archer; and National Peanut Board Promotions, Ted Higginbotham.
A reception at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by dinner and entertainment.
