On Sept. 23, 2000 the North Carolina Pecan Growers Association will sponsor the first joint North Carolina and South Carolina pecan grower's field day.
Two orchards will be visited. Near Chesterfield, S.C., Mike Goodwin's orchard will be the first visited. It is located off Highway 742 onto Boatwright Bridge Road, then on Raney Road.
Anna Goodwin's is the second orchard and is located on Stanback Road, Lilesville, N.C.
Clemson University is partnering with the North Carolina Pecan Growers Association and North Carolina State University in this day-long educational program. The program will be in orchards selected to best demonstrate effective management strategies throughout the life of pecan trees.
Kent Anderson, a buyer for Young Pecan Co., Florence, S.C., will join North Carolina growers, NCSU Extension specialists and representatives from the NCDA Marketing Division on the informal program.
Since forming in 1994, NCPGA has annually held workshops and field days. However, this is the first program in the southern Peidmont, where the soils and climate are ideal for pecan farming.
A catered lunch will be provided between orchard visits.
