New horizons for a changing industry will be the theme of the 2007 Northeast Tennessee Beef Expo. Scheduled for Oct. 11, the day-long event will be held at the University of Tennessee Research and Education Center at Greeneville.

Registration and a trade show will begin at 7:00 a.m., and the program will begin at 8:00 a.m. The cost to attend the day-long program is $5, which includes a luncheon. Participants must pre-register with a local UT Extension office by Sept. 28.

Topics to be discussed include forages and biofuels, how to make your cattle worth more through value added marketing, cost-conscious feeding decisions, and poisonous plants and other toxicities.

While not on the formal agenda, remediation of operations stricken by the drought will be on the minds of producers hit hard by shortages of hay and water, and dried-out pastures. Many producers have already made the difficult decision of culling animals as a result of the drought.

Wendy Lofton, with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, will present an update of the state’s ag enhancement cost-share program.

The event is co-sponsored by UT Extension — Eastern Region, and the UT Research and Education Center at Greeneville.

Mark Harmon, of Joplin Regional Stockyards in Missouri will present the luncheon program.

An afternoon program featuring beef quality assurance training should conclude around 3:30 p.m.
