Alabama peanut referendum is May 26

Polling places being established

• Polling places are currently being established in each county with over 500 acres of peanuts in the 2010 crop year.

• Any producer who has grown peanuts in crop years 2008, 2009, or 2010 is eligible to vote.

The Alabama Peanut Producers Association is required by law to hold a producer referendum every three years to continue the state check-off program for peanuts.

This year’s referendum has been set for Thursday, May 26, 2011.

Polling places are currently being established in each county with over 500 acres of peanuts in the 2010 crop year. Some counties with less than 500 acres will be having a polling site upon their request. Polling hours will be from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. unless otherwise stated.

Any producer who has grown peanuts in crop years 2008, 2009, or 2010 is eligible to vote. Additional criteria for voting eligibility includes: Individual members in farm or partnership entities who had a financial risk in the production of the crop in the qualifying years; growers who live in Alabama but may have marketed their peanuts in neighboring states will be considered eligible; and out-of-state producers who produced or marketed peanuts in Alabama.

A list of polling places for each county will be updated as locations are confirmed.
