All segments of the beef industry join together in making the Sunbelt Expo beef exhibits an outstanding trade show attraction.
The beef exhibits are the oldest livestock exhibits at the Expo, and this year beef producers are in for a real treat.
The beef exhibits will once again feature production seminars covering hot topics of interest to cattle producers. You’ll find the beef section of Expo at location E-8 under the Bill Patten Beef Pavilion, named after the Expo’s longtime board member and exhibitor.
The beef presentations will take place each day of Expo beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The daily schedule calls for an opening presentation by Georgia Extension livestock Economist Curt Lacy who will speak on the economics of beef cattle production in the Southeast, along with comments on the near- and long-term market outlook for beef cattle.
He will be followed at 10:30 a.m. by a presentation from Extension forage scientists from the Southeast on production, management and storage issues for forage producers.
At 11:30 a.m., Terry Harris from the Livestock and Grain Market News division of the USDA-Agricultural Marketing Service will cover the topic of body condition scoring and how this affects USDA grading and the marketing of beef cattle. They will be assisted in the presentation by Matt Hersom, Florida Extension beef specialist.
Then, at 12:30 p.m. each day, Lee Jones will address the backgrounding of beef cattle. He’ll also cover how health and nutrition affect average daily gains in cattle. Jones is a veterinarian at the University of Georgia’s Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory in Tifton, Ga.
This will be followed at 1:30 p.m. by another presentation by Extension forage scientists with practical advice on producing and storing harvested forage crops.
The daily presentations will conclude with a 2:30 p.m. presentation by Joanna Davis on biosecurity measures that should be considered by cattle producers. Davis is a veterinarian with the USDA’s Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service and will offer common sense steps producers can take to keep farms free of damaging diseases.
She will also staff an exhibit with information on animal identification and surveillance for dangerous cattle diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
In addition, the beef scientists will also staff an “ask the expert” exhibit throughout each day of the show. Expo visitors are invited to ask the scientists questions about beef cattle production and health management. The Extension forage scientists from the Southeast will also staff their own “ask the expert” exhibit table.
