House, Senate to discuss energy proposals

With House passage of an energy bill, the stage is set for Congress to craft compromise energy legislation based on both House and Senate proposals, including some provisions recommended by the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA).
“We’re glad that both the House and Senate passed their versions of the bill before the August recess,” said NCGA President Ken McCauley. “With senators back in their home states this month, this is a perfect time for corn growers to make our voices heard on energy legislation, the farm bill, WRDA and other important issues.”
On Aug. 4, the House passed HR 3221, the “New Direction for Independence, National Security, and Consumer Protection Act” by a vote of 241 to 172. This broad energy package included bills from nine committees, including Agriculture, Transportation & Infrastructure, Natural Resources, Ways & Means and Energy & Commerce, and focuses on expanding domestic energy use in the United States and improving energy efficiency.
Overall, this bill focused on energy efficiencies, advancing cellulosic biofuels and ways to build and support a more energy efficient economy. With completion of the House energy package, a Senate and House conference committee will negotiate a final package. At this point, no conferees have been selected and no timetable has been set for conferencing the two bills.
